General William Palmer founded Colorado Springs in August 1871 with the intention of creating a high-quality resort community that was nicknamed "Little London" because of the large amounts of English tourists that consistently visited.
Within 2 years his flagship resort the Antlers Hotel opened. Soon after, he founded the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, which soon became a critical regional railroad. He continued to live in the area by selling land to many aristocratic individuals in the community.
